There’s been a certain amount of a ruckus in the WordPress community of late. At the heart of the various bits of drama has been a concern about how themes relate to plugins and who controls who sees what version of plugins in various venues.

The most important element in this was perhaps the one with the least drama overall–and my purpose here is not to rehash the back and forth of any of it. But the introduction of the Ollie theme to the theme repository raised at least two key questions:

  1. How much functional capability can be packaged into a theme without disqualifying that theme from appearing in the theme repository?
  2. How can the onboarding process be improved so that truly new WordPress adopters don’t get lost and frustrated as soon as they try to do anything on their site.

What I think is going on here, viewed more broadly…
